John Roberts use of quirky back beats, rythmic illusions, intricate percussion and hard hitting house grooves are calving him a name as one of dial’s most exciting and innovating new talents. Roberts is pushing boundaries, integrating chicago house loops with cleverly placed jazz and blue note melodies, whilst at the same time adding his unique use of organic samples that are a staple in all his recent releases. .

Spotted by Carsten Jost and Pantha du Prince he has been hand selected by the heads right at the top. With the full force of Dial behind him Roberts is sure to have a huge influence upon the direction of things to come. Btw – if you dont like it thats because your not ready for it yet.

David Moufang is what happens when you combine a little German space obsessed boy with two grandmothers who are both classical pianists.

From an early age Moufang took up drums shortly followed by Jazz guitar. Moufang got into the techno scene in the early 90’s and became a dedicated clubber listening to the sounds of 808 state, Detroit and early forms of ambient techno. Moufang’s early releases were made through Deep Space Network with tunes such as ‘Big Rooms’ helping to highlight his distinctive free sound. Moufangs releases at that time ranged from subtle Detroit grooves to open and spacey electronic infused Jazz.

Tony Marcus puts it like this:

‘A sweet and lazy adventure into sound, a space where time and space are suspended’

KUNSTOFF, Moufangs debut album, released in 1995 helped push forward the more intricate electronics that Detroit was starting to explore. His productions could be attributed to his time studying audio engineering, exploring textures and clever reverbs to add depth and soften the Detroit groove.

In recent times Moufang has played under the guise of Move D partnering with Benjamin Brunn to create ‘Lets Call it a Day’ and ‘Songs from the Beehive’ the latter of which received rave reviews from the electronic community catapulting Moufang’s DJ career to new levels .

Hunee is yet another Berlin gem I stumbled across recently. After watching the following video clip I quickly realised my short break from partying needs to be quickly rectified.

Hunee is a Korean born Berlin tech House producer who has been getting rave reviews at the moment thanks to his refreshing take on deep house. Hunee has been released on John Daly’s label ‘Feel Music’ who has also released another favourite of mine John Roberts. His music is melodic and uses interesting strings and chimes to build fluid layers into his tracks. With a user rating of 4.88 on RA this smooth Berlin going Korean seems to be pressing all the right buttons.

Peter Kersten – aka – Lawrence/Sten – tech house that takes you deeper

Peter runs the Kompact affiliated label ‘Dial’ dial with his friend and fellow producer Carsten Jost. Together they also run the record store and label ‘Smallville’. As Lawrence, Kersten has released on Cocoon, Mule Electronic and Kompact.

Sten is the guise of the deep minimal dance floor guru that tours the World from South America to Japan helping the people get down and deep to his Detroit minimal tech sound.

Lawrence is the lucky moniker that has been attracting the most attention as of late. Slowing down the groove and bringing in more percussive and jazzy elements to his résumé, through Lawrence Peter has demonstrated his musical flexibility and diversity as a producer. Lawrence tracks have been used by producers such as Sven Vath, Thomas Tobias and Josh Wink within their compilations, receiving much acclaim.

The first ‘Lawrence’ album is mixture of house, minimal techno and experimental pieces, whereas the second ‘The Absence of Blight’ (Dial, 2003) had a straighter touch. Lawrence’s latest 3 part release including tracks such as Jill, which have taken a turn away from his techno staple and rely on layered percussion and restrained jazzy synthesisers to set a relaxing nu-house groove.

Peter Kersten is one of a handful of producers that is on the forefront of pushing house music into a new realm. His sounds are warm, hit beats are deep and percussive, and he packs a classy punch that is sure to get your hips swaying.

Catch Lawrence at The Golden Pudel or Click in Hamburg.
