Efdemin is one of the most influential producers and DJ’s sculpting the sound of modern German house, and at the moment, with the rise of so many influential labels such as Dial and Innervisions coming out of Germany, that means a lot.
Efdemin’s self entitled album is a mix of Techno, Deep House and minimal. Undoubtedly one of the best releases of 2008, the albums intricate beats, refined bass lines, and commanding production put this album right at the top of the pile.
Like Villalobos, Phillip was also a big Depeche Mode fan, doing his time in a few bands and then making the transition to Dance Music. Phillip is an accomplished Cellist who has also studied Computer Music in Vienna, specialising in sound installations which later helped contribute to his drone music productions, something that’s very important to him as a producer.
So what can we expect from Efdemin?
“What I play has become more and more reduced. I got bored with too many melodies. I think my next stuff will sound much different, I’ve got a different feeling now. I’m interested in layering things from worlds outside house and techno. It’s what Ricardo [Villalobos] does a lot and I appreciate it. He comes up with these children singing or an orchestra playing and he takes out the kick for five minutes and people really rave. Then the kick comes back and people go crazy. He always has this simple beat in the back. It’s always there, but it’s not always important.”
Give it time, its a slow burner.
I wasn’t sure initially but I really ended up liking the tune and I think there is a gap in the market for this sort of new music I hope it gets the backing and support. It is a shame when you come across something really good that doesn’t get the air time.
